Château de Cérons Graves Red

2020 : The 2020 vintage is particularly marked by a warm climate. The winter is mild, with little rainfall, accompanied by unusually warm temperatures. The budburst is early. The spring, warm and damp, favors an active growth. By contrast, the summer is dry and very hot, slowing down the maturation of the grapes. Fortunately, we receive a series of small stormy rains from mid-August onwards which boosts the ripening of the grapes. At harvest time, the berries are beautiful, very healthy and have a remarkable organoleptic quality.

The wines are rich, aromatic and precise. The vintage is generous and intense. A tasty and voluptuous wine.

89-90/100

A medium, fruity red with berries, walnuts and some crushed-stone character. Straightforward finish.

JAMES SUCKLING

89-90/100

YVES BECK

91/100

Gentle brambled fruit flavours; beautifully balanced and fresh, full of signature Graves finesse, sappy and enticing. 50% new oak barrels give the barest smudge of smoke. Drinking Window 2022 – 2028

JANE ANSON

91-93/100.

YOHAN CASTAING

92/100

Dark purple colour with violet hue and almost black core. Elegant nose with discreet fruit, blackberries, raspberries and wild strawberries, hints of blackcurrant spurs and aromatic herbs in the background. Discreet spiciness and fine toasting aroma. On the palate ripe fruit, sweet plums, dark berries and gingerbread spices, convincing length.

MARKUS DEL MONEGO

90-91/100

ADRIAN VAN VELSEN

87-89/100.

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, opaker Kern, zarte Ockerrandaufhellung. Zart rotbeerig unterlegte Fruchtnuancen, dezente blättrige Würze, Tabak, etwas Veloursleder. Mittlere Komplexität, reife Pflaumen, präsente Tannine, etwas Bitterschokolade, etwas rustikaler Gesamteindruck.

PETER MOSER

90-91/100.

BERNARD BURTSCHY

90/100.

80 CS 20 M 14.5%. Ripe floral and inviting deep black and red fruit aromas. Juicy and inviting. Creaminess of texture with ripe black and red fruits and good fine grained tannic extraction. Fresh acidity and lovely pure fruit. Well balanced and long, this is a terrific wine and great value for its likely price.

RODERICK SMITH

90-91/100.

2019 : Unpredictable and unusual weather! An exceptionally short, mild and rainy winter. Despite the early budding of the vines, we avoided the spring frosts of March, April and May.

The heat settles suddenly at the end of May and brings us into the summer period, which accelerates the development of the vines. Hot and dry summer. Stormy rains at the beginning of August allowed the grapes to ripen in ideal conditions with alternating hot, sunny days and cool nights.

The wines are ripe, rich and aromatic. They have sap and precision. 2019 is a wine of style and depth, a wine of  balance, power and purity.

89-90/100
A very good Cerons with black-fruit and crushed-stone character. Medium to full body. Juicy finish.

JAMES SUCKLING

91/100
Well judged Cérons majoring on gentle but well expressed and focused blackberry and cassis fruits, lovely fresh mint finish with grip and pliable tannins. This is a great example of the effortless balance that Graves can deliver in the right hands. 50% new oak. Drinking window 2021-2034.

JANE ANSON

90-92/100
60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon.

JONATHAN CHOUKROUN CHICHEPORTICHE

Dark purple colour with violet hue and almost black core. Elegant and refined nose with blackberries, raspberries and hints of chestnut blossoms. On the palate well-balanced wite ripe tannins, freshness and aromatic depth, lingering berry fruit in the aftertaste. A wine with length.

MARKUS DEL MONEGO

89-91/100
The 2019 de Cérons is gorgeous. Plush, silky and inviting, the 2019 has so much immediacy to offer. Raspberry jam, blood orange, mint, spice and pomegranate all open up nicely in the glass. Radiant and yet also fresh, with notable energy, de Cérons is a winner in 2019.

ANTONIO GALLONI

91-93/100. 18.5/20
(13.5%, 60% Merlot 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, verkostet am 1. Juni 2020
in Windisch). 2023-2030.

2018 : The 2018 vintage was a real test of patience.
The first 6 months of the year were dominated by incessant rainfall and mild temperatures. The weather then changed radically on the 15th of July, marking the start of a hot summer with periods of drought.
The harvest period stretched from late August to late October, with the grapes reaching excellent levels of maturity. This exceptionally long and rain-free harvest period allowed us to fine-tune our picking operations. In the cellar the juices proved to be very consistent, with a beautiful colour.
This was an unusual year with extreme conditions, but in the end it turned out to be an excellent vintage.

89-90/100
Tangy and fun with sliced-citrus and currant character.
Medium body. Fresh and clean. Nicely done for this estate.

JAMES SUCKLING

15.5/20
Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot. Barrel sample.
Fragrant with blackcurrant, lively. Lighter weight than some but
balanced and the tannins showsome finesse already.A touch of
chocolate texture on the finish. (JH)13% Drink 2023- 2029

JULIA HARDING

85-87/100
A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
The 2018 Cérons is deep garnet-purple colored and reveals
warm black plums and black cherries notions with hints of cracked pepper black olives and sautéed herbs. Medium-bodied with a firm, chewy texture and lively backbone, it has an earthy finish.

LISA PERROTTI

Nicely textured and well-made, the 2018 Château De Cérons is
medium-bodied and classy, with fine tannins and terrific
balance. It’s another rocking wine in the vintage that’s going to
sell for a song.

JEB DUNNUCK

90-92/100

YOHANN CASTAING

88-90/100
Blueberries, anise, spices, scented, floral nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, dark fruity, spicy, anise, liquorice, juicy, good length. 88-90.

2017 : 2017, a year that blew hot and cold…
Everything started out well. Bud break was even and took place three weeks earlier than usual
–harbinger of a good vintage in Bordeaux.
However, two nights with frost did damage throughout the region, and our estate was not spared.
Fortunately, the plots located closest to the château, and thus not far from the Garonne, were
hardly affected.
The harvest began on the 8th of September after a very dry, sunny, and hot month of August.
This fine weather is reflected in the quality of the wine, as is the expertise of our winemaking
team.
The white wines are delicious, with a great deal of freshness and minerality.
The reds have a deep colour, lovely aromatics, excellent fruit, and attractive freshness. The
wines are smooth, round, and balanced on the palate.
Due to challenging weather conditions, the 2017 vintage was low in volume. However, the care
taken in the vineyard and cellar were rewarded by promising wines.

88-90/100
The 2017 de Cérons has a perfumed, floral, almost Margaux-like bouquet with fine definition. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red and black fruit laced with pencil lead and black pepper, nicely balanced on the finish with plenty of freshness. This Graves has produced a decent 2017 that should give several years of drinking pleasure.

NEAL MARTIN

16/20
Deep purplish crimson. Lovely lifted cherry and cassis aroma, complemented by the lightest touch of spice plus a delicate dusty minerality. Elegant on the palate – the tannins are very fine and perfectly balanced by the freshness and the lively fresh fruit. Subtle but sustained on the finish. Quite gentle.

JANCIS ROBINSON

86/100
There’s an emphasis on soft berries, white pepper spice and redcurrant fruits here. Again, a touch of under ripeness is evident, but this is an enjoyable wine with a welcome sweetness rom 25% new oak barrels to round out the finish. It has been extremely carefully handled and offers great medium term drinking.

JANE ANSON

90/100
Dark purple red with violet hue and black core. Elegant nose with fragrant fruit, raspberries, blackcurrants and blackberries, hints of vanilla and dark chocolate in the background. On the palate elegant with juicy fruit, ripe tannins, freshness and good length.

MARKUS DEL MONEGO

86/100
This wine shows stalky fruit and dusty tannins. Its acidity and spice come through strongly along with attractive black currant fruit flavor. It will be ready to drink early.

2016 : will long be remembered because of the very unusual weather: heavy rain in winter, drought in summer, and a superb Indian summer. We had never seen such extreme and highly unusual conditions. The harvest was exceptionally long, beginning in early September for the white wines and late October – and even early November – for the reds and Cérons.
The wines are altogether magnificent. The reds are deeply-coloured and full of fruit, the whites are elegant and show great aromatic complexity, and the sweet wines have outstanding floral overtones.”

16-18

16/20
Sharp and very Cabernet on the nose – nothing wrong with that! Pure and fresh even if not  complex. Sinewy. Attractive and easy. But the core is a little light.

JANCIS ROBINSON

88–90/100

YVES BECK

89-91/100
Ruby. Dark fruits, some spices, blackberries, coffee and vanilla nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, dark berries, more juicy palate than nose suggests, good length.

CHRISTER BYKLUM

14/20
Robe grenat. 0-5 ans.

2015 : This was a great year reflecting both quality and consistency.
The weather was perfect. It was hot and sunny weather until late July. Cooler temperatures and a few showers in August were conducive to good, even ripening, and the grapes were picked in excellent condition.
The harvest and fermentation took place without a hitch, beginning with Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris, followed by Sémillon, then Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes used to make Cérons were picked in several passes under ideal conditions.

The Perromat family deliver an excellent 2015 from 55% Semillon, 40% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Sauvignon Gris. Keeps the exotic fruit character of the Semillon without losing the acidity. Aged in stainless steel, with lees stirring.

Neal Martin

Dark purple red with violet hue. Elegant nose with fine fruit, blackberries, raspberries and hints of cassis, toasted aroma in the background with hints of mild spices…

MARKUS DEL MONEGO

The replanting programme here continues to reap rewards; this is lovely proof of the potential of the soils. Restraint and balance but still delivers soft cherry and blackberry fruit and an attractive lift on the finish.

2014 : A miraculous vintage! September and October have saved this vintage beyond expectations, and “made” it good to very good, especially thanks to the Cabernets. The robe is bright black cherry colour, the nose is sensual, soft and caressing. The palate has crisp and fresh red fruit notes.

Julien Bellewine expert, march 2015

Exciting developments happening at this Graves estate that is run by Xavier Perromat, now joined by his wife Caroline after 15 years at Haut-Bailly. From a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, there is a gentle toast eveident and pretty brambly fruit structure, with a light touch on the tannins : 16,5/20

Jane AnsonDecanter

The Château de Cérons 2014 has a light and fresh nose that is showing plenty of joie-de-vivre if not great complexity. Nothing wrong with that. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, quite fleshy in the mouth and then lacking a little backbone on the easy finish. There is some decent fruit here but it will be for early drinking only : 87/100

2012 : The terroir of Château de Cérons and meticulous work in the vineyard allowed the grapes to reach optimum maturity  for both the red and white wines in spite of contrasting climatic conditions. It gave aromatic, fresh and velvety wines with magnificent ageing potential.

We like it without having to wait, it’s gaving at us, waiting for our mouth, quiet, smiling. It’s balanced Julien Belle, yes balanced ! We cherish this red, the best of the morning, in the lively company of Caroline Perromat.

ŒnoteamDaniel J. Berger

This vintage is not born into an easy year but its sharpness, flexibility and its silky tannins make it immediately delectable, showing a perfect balance red wine from Bordeaux.

2010 : After a cold, dry winter, spring and summer of 2010 were beautiful. July was very hot which was instrumental in concentrating the grapes. Alternating hot daytime temperatures and cool evenings during the vintage led to perfectly ripe grapes that produced well-balanced and aromatic wines.

87/100

A steady garnet colour. Pleasant nose combining red fruit, smocky hints and subtle oak flavours. Supple attack, well-rounded, tight and aromatic mouth whose rich, spicy and fresh material is framed by fine tannins. A good Graves to open in 3-5 years.

Gilbert & Gaillard

Blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, a restrained, elegant expression of this super ripe vintage. The merlot aged in 20% new oak while the Cabernet stays in cement tanks to emphasise rich black fruits. I love that these wines are not trying to be something they are not. « We are lucky to have this limestone surrounded by gravel in Cérons », says Caroline. « it gives a true Signature and personnality to the wines, and we want to celebrate that ».
